We are in the process
of moving in to our new home page. Please be
patient and excuse the mess.
Bullies and Badguys
Which bullies and badguys do you remember from the Happy
Hollister series? Here's a listing of bullies and badguys who
appear in the books. I'll also list which book they appeared in
...or in the case of those that appeared in more than one, I'll
list the first book that they appeared in.
JOEY BRILL
Joey appeared for the first time in the first book. The
Hollister children met him in Chapter One while they were in
the process of moving to Shoreham. Pam's impression of him was
that he was not a very friendly boy. He was described as being
Pete's age, tall and heavily built. He told Holly that they
didn't need any more kids in Shoreham when she informed him of
where they were moving to. Holly thought he was rude.
Throughout the series, Joey is a serious thorn in the Hollisters
sides. He's a braggart, a bullie and very unfriendly. His main
purpose is to make life for the Hollister children more
difficult. Despite all of this, I have a confession to make. I
actually LIKED Joey! In the first book, he's an awful kid, but
after you've read a few books in the series...you start to see a
more likeable of Joey and start to understand the reason he's not
so nice. Joey is the kid who doesn't have many friends...and all
of the other kids play jokes on him. Basically, he's teased and
pretty much a loner. He's willing to go along with other bullies
in order to have a friend. After reading most of the books in
the series, this is the way that I saw Joey. I kept rooting for
him to find a good friend who would turn his life around. Alas,
it never happened!
Bo Stenkle
Bo had stolen before. Prior to his dealings with the
Hollisters, he had stolen a horse. Bo Stenkle is the badguy
from the first book. He is described as really thin, had
close-set eyes and black hair that stuck straight up. He
also wears a little red hat. He lives on Blackberry Island, and
is a thief who pounces on any opportunity he can. Not only did
he steal the Hollisters moving van and sell off some of the
stuff contained in it, but he also regularly broke into their
house in search of a treasure. Shortly after he finds the
treasure, he gets caught. Even then, he won't tell where the
treasure is hidden and Pete has to find it on his own. Bo seems
to be a lesser (small-time) criminal than some of the other
badguys in the series, but I felt no pity for him whatsoever.
